Caring For Your Offroad Camper Trailer
Offroad and general camper trailers are a great way to see the countryside. Whether it be for a quick weekend camping trip or a month long trek around the country an offroad camper trailer will enable you to travel in comfort, offering you the convenience of space, versatility and usability.
To ensure you get the best out of your camper trailer it is important that you take proper care of it. There are some simple rules that you should follow when using your camper trailer that will increase its life and ensure it remains a comfortable and easy form of holiday for years to come.
Care for your canvas
After camping wash the canvas on your offroad camper trailer down with cold water and a brush. Do not use soap or detergent and do not expose it to petrol, oil or solvents. Ensure the canvas is completely dry before storing.
Stop leaking canvas
The canvas used on camper trailers is waterproof so any leaks that you may experience will be coming from the seams where the canvas is sewn together. This can be easily fixed by using a seam-sealing product designed for this exact reason. It can be purchased from any outdoor or camping store.
Look after the zippers on your camper trailer
Try to keep the teeth of the zipper as clean as possible. Only use clean running water to clean the zipper and never force the zipper if it becomes stiff to operate. Use a dry lubricant like silicon to create a smoother zipper. An oil-based lubricant or wax stick will only attract dirt and dust which makes the zipper harder to use and wears away the inside of the sliders.
Ensuring travel safety
Regular maintenance of your offroad camper trailer is essential for safe towing. Have it, along with the vehicle that will be towing it checked regularly to ensure they are both safe and roadworthy. Check the brakes, suspension and wheel-bearings are all in good working order and ensure the tyres are properly inflated.
Check your gas cylinder
Gas cylinders and LPG regulators should be checked regularly. Check all hoses and pipes are securely connected and ensure cylinders are not out of date. If your camper trailer is left outside ensure the LPG regulator has not been affected by water as this will cause corrosion and prevent it from working properly. If water is in the regulator it will need to be drained and cleaned thoroughly.
Look after the paintwork
At the end of each trip wash your camper down and touch up any stone chips that have occurred. This will prevent rust developing and prolong the life and look of your camper's paintwork.
Storing your offroad camper trailer
If your camper trailer is not going to be used for several weeks it is best to remove the weight from it. This takes the pressure off the tyres and springs and where the A-frame attaches to the chassis. By using a jockey wheel to raise and lower the trailer this can be done quite easily.
Your camper trailer should last you for years and years providing you with a comfortable home away from home. Following these simple maintenance tips will help to ensure the long life of your camper trailer.
But the most important thing to remember is have fun and enjoy the great outdoors.
